George Clooney has real-life hospital drama when he and friend Sarah Larson were admitted to the Palisades Medical Center in New Jersey last month after suffering some injuries from a motorcycle crash. According to reports, 27 of the hospital's 1,200 employees, excluding doctors, has been suspended without pay for one month for allegedly prying at the former ER star's confidential medical records.
Clooney's information to the public but accessed his records improperly. Eurice Rojas, the hospital's vice president of external affairs, says that the workers have violated the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which notes that only direct caregivers, including the doctors and nurses as well as technicians and support staff involved in the patient's care, can look at a patient's records.
"We have systems in place to audit and protect the records of any patient," Rojas emphasized. "Any conduct that violates the trust of our patients and the high standards we set is taken very seriously. The 46-year-old actor, who had only learned of the situation this week, hopes that the matter could be resolved in a more rational approach.
Jeanne Oterson, a spokeswoman for the Health Professionals and Allied Employees union, also thinks that the suspension is quite ruthless.
"This is the first I've heard of it," the former ER star said in a statement. "And while I very much believe in a patient's right to privacy, I would hope that this could be settled without suspending medical workers."
